Dehydration & Kidney Stones

Did you know that dehydration is the biggest risk factor for kidney stones.

There are several types of kidney stones but calcium stones are the most common. These types of stones are created when calcium combines with 1 of 3 substances to form the stone, most often with a substance called oxalate.   Source: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000458.htm#Prevention

Oxalate is present in many foods, some with higher levels than others. Some low oxalate foods that you can enjoy include: green tea, apple cider, raisins, avocados, bing cherries, grapes, melons, fish (not sardines), cucumber, cauliflower, shellfish, poultry.

Are You Sitting down too long?

James Levine, M.D., PhD., a professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn found that obese people sit for about 2 hours and 45 minutes more a day than lean people.

A diabetes journal article supports Dr. Levine's position by highlighting that "It is not uncommon for people to spend one-half of their waking day sitting, with relatively idle muscles. The other half of the day includes the often large volume of nonexercise physical activity.

Biomarkers for Alzheimer's

The Early show reported that researchers have identified a protein biomarker that may be helpful in Alzheimer's prevention. It has been determined that 3 stages of the disease exist: Preclinical, Mild impairment and full blown Alzheimer's. It is in the preclinical stage that the newly identified biomarkers will be of particular importance, as this stage can occur approximately 10 years before other symptoms become apparent.

We all are aware that age is a primary risk factor, with the risk doubling after the age of 65. Additional risk factors include family history, head injuries and body weight. Speaking of body weight - a nutritious diet with a variety of food from each food group is extremely beneficial.

What is good for your heart is also good for your head:
  • Maintain a healthy weight with a good balance of exercise and food.
  • Limit foods with high saturated fat and cholesterol.
  • Cut down on sugars.
  • Limit foods with high sodium and use less salt.
  • Stay hydrated (some people may have fluid restrictions due to another medical condition, such as heart failure or liver cirrhosis). (Source: WebMD)

Spice up your health with TUMERIC!

I got a whole new meaning of "spice" after recently reading current reports on CANCER prevention and the spice Tumeric.

Its long-term knowledge that tumeric works both as an immune booster and potent anti-inflammatory. Given the runaway cancer statistics in the U.S. these days, perhaps tumeric's greatest value lies in its anti-cancer potential.

The prevalence colon, breast, prostate and lung cancers in India (where turmeric is widely used) is 10 times lower than in the U.S. . The fact that men in India are rarely diagnosed with prostate cancer is attributed, in part, to the curcumin in turmeric.

“Various scientific studies have shown curcumin (that the yellow compound in turmeric), contains potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These can inhibit tumor cell growth and suppress enzymes that activate carcinogens.” http://www2.mdanderson.org/cancerwise/2011/01/turmeric-adds-spice-to-your-health.html

Suggestions for cooking with turmeric :
Curry mixes, Chutney, It also goes well with vegetables, rice, and salad dressing.

Is you diet too acidic for your health?

We are all born with alkaline bodies that become acidic due to the acidic foods that are widespread in the modern Standard American Diet (SAD).

"Our bodies are alkaline by design and acid by function. Maintaining proper alkalinity is essential for life, health, and vitality. Simply put - an imbalance of alkalinity creates a condition favorable to the growth of bacteria, yeast and other unwanted organisms. All leading biochemists and medical physiologists have recognized pH (or the acid-alkaline balance) as the most important aspect of a balanced and healthy body."

When you consume a high-acid diet, you may be jeopardizing the delicate acid-alkaline balance of your body's chemistry, which may lead to many serious health problems.

"If we were to ask "What is killing us?", the answer might be "ACIDOSIS"! It has been demonstrated that an acidic, anaerobic (lacking oxygen) body environment encourages the breeding of fungus, mold, bacteria, and viruses."To learn about how this contributes to osteoporosis visit http://www.thewolfeclinic.com/phbalancearticle.html

In order for your body to stay balanced and well, it needs to maintain a healthy pH level of 7.3 to 7.44, which is slightly alkaline.
The pH level of Kangen Water® is in the healthy range of 8.5 to 9.5. Kangen Water® is clean, delicious, filtered water that can be conveniently available at your own kitchen sink. Kangen Water® can help your body maintain a healthier pH level.

The following is a testimony from an individual that recently started drinking the Kangen Water®
Dr. Velonda,
I am writing you to let you know how I have benefited from your alkaline water. I suffered from acid reflux when I slept. In the morning I would wake up and my whole esophagus and throat would be burning. My doctor recommended that I sleep with my head and back elevated but that was uncomfortable and awkward. I then started taking Prilosec every night before bed. This worked to alleviate the reflux but it is pricey and I didn't want to be taking this every day for the rest of my life. So when Rev mentioned that it helped her reflux I decided to give it a try. Well it worked. I drink a tall glass before I go to bed and in the morning I didn't have any burning what so ever. I always think natural holistic cures are the best and I am glad the water solved the problem.
 Thanks,
 Patricia Ewell
