Obesity - Children learn what they live!

On May 11th the Task Force on Childhood Obesity reported to President Obama that 1 of every 3 American children is either overweight or obese. Children learn what they live! While the solution is simple, the application is the challenge.

With back to school time shortly upon us, remember healthy kids sprout healthy futures. Let's all (parents and teachers) use their love of technology to teach how to make healthy choices. The "Nourish Interactive" is a fun way to learn about nutrition. Try it, you'll love it! http://www.nourishinteractive.com

Nutrition, movement, access and personal responsibility are the tenets of Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign. I think we all can embrace these work areas. Children learn what the live!     http://www.letsmove.gov

Say no to cholesterol - Fast Food Statin Pack?

At first I was amazed at the TV4 news story, then I was perplexed as to why any entity that is really interested in reducing disease associated with high cholesterol and helping to reduce the national medical crisis would suggest that individuals get cholesterol lowering drugs with their fast food carry out. How about just eating less fast food, more vegetables and choose the lesser fat choices when dining out!

The fact is we can not do without the researchers, health is cummulative and science based. However, you get to choose. You have the power to be naturally fit!

For more research comments by Senior author Dr. Darrel Francis of the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London visit  http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2010/08/14/Fast-food-could-supply-a-statin-with-meal/UPI-80181281762029/

Hot Fun in the Summer Time!

It's an ozone alert day in Detroit. Now more than ever water is the way! Divide your body weight in half and that represents the number of ounces of water that you should be drinking on a average temperature day. Today you will need that many ounce plus some.

I know many will run for the flavored beverages and fruit juices. Not the same as water. It's summer, get some fresh fruit!

Who's a Vegetarian?

Who would not want to be a vegetarian these days? How about just eating more vegetables? How many rainbows have you enjoyed at mealtime recently?

The current issue of Michigan based B.L.A.C. magazine features the growing Detroit movement to support vegetarian living. Hooray!

I along with my fellow nutritionist and long time plant based healers are flipping cartwheels of excitement as it seems more and more people are body and environment conscious. When we (friends like Jesse Brown, Dr. Oliver, Mikial & BJ) started on this journey to wellness some 30+ years ago, we could not have imagined an "International Vegetarian Union". If you need a little more convincing to get started on you way to a meat free lifestyle, you should read "By Any Green Necessary" by Tracye Lynn McQuirter. I especially liked that she shares the Environmental Working Group's 2 pesticide food list; the "Dirty Dozen" and the "Clean 15" (Page 88)  (look for the lists in upcoming blog posting)

Healthy Hearts Club

What's Your Healthy Heart Lifestyle?

While many of us are totally aware of the following list, the benefits of repetition far outweigh any repeated information. Take these items into consideration in your everyday life – because they work if we take them to heart.

Heart Fitness – If you want a healthy heart, the best way is through exercise.

Diet – When fatty meats are avoided, your heart is able to sing.

Smoking – It matters. We know it. Don't start and if you currently do – quit!

Weight – Extra pounds are a strain on the joints and your heart.

Blood Pressure – Be healthy and have it checked.

Cholesterol – One part good, one part not so good, it's a key ingredient to know your HDL and LDL levels!

Stress – If the eyes are the window to the soul, the heart is the caretaker of our emotions. Learning how to handle stressful situations can enable a steady heart rate and a stronger muscle.

Happiness – Laughter is good medicine and feeds a healthy heart.

Friendships – Studies show that those with strong friendship live longer, happier and healthier lives

A healthy heart is important for men and women, especially later in life since statistics show that 2 out of 3 of us will personally deal with this issue during our lifetime. The great news is we don't have to wait. In fact, a few strides toward a healthy lifestyle can turn the tables in your favor.
